At the mention of 'pirate' most people think of Captain Jack Sparrow because of the franchise. Why is he such a great pirate? Loose and billowy shirt under various layers of vests, tops, jewelry, beads, and hair; belts, maps, and weapons; and some personality.
This photo is great because the girl (Nikita?) is undeniably a pirate in her composure and costume. She is sexy and dangerous.
Also helping the overall image, the choice of black and white rather than full color gives the piece a time-filled look to when pirates still dressed in that fashion. Modern pirates are not so exciting. Her other photos in color are still lovely, but I prefer the black and white.
Perhaps though, I might argue the nail polish as unnecessary and breaks from the period feel. That says to me, "modern and out-of-place". The facial tattoo, on the other hand, is a subtle touch I didn't notice at first, but really adds character.
I can't give the concept of "pirate" any points on originality, it has been used time and time again over many years, but the execution and impact are excellent.
